How to import and export Shopify metaobjects with CSV

Export your data, edit the CSV, and import it back into Shopify. Here’s the whole loop, step by step — the same six steps whether you’re changing 8 entries or 800.

  1. 01Export
  2. 02Edit
  3. 03Save as CSV
  4. 04Upload
  5. 05Review results
  6. 06Track history

Step 1: Export your metaobject entries

Select the metaobject you want to work on and export its entries as a CSV. The file is your template: it shows the column names, how handles are written and how each field is structured.

  • Start every new import this way, so your columns match exactly.
  • Exports are unlimited on every plan, including Free.

Step 2: Edit the CSV in your spreadsheet

Open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or any CSV editor. Keep the column structure as exported, then update the rows you want to change or add new rows below them.

  • To update an entry, change its values and leave its handle alone.
  • To create an entry, add a row with a new, unique handle.
  • Reference products and collections by handle, files by URL.

Step 3: Save it as a CSV file

Save the file in CSV format — not as a spreadsheet workbook. Before you move on, check that every expected column is still there and each value sits in the right column.

Step 4: Upload it to Metaobjectify

Back in Metaobjectify, select the same metaobject you exported from and upload your edited file. Every row is checked before anything is written to your store.

Step 5: Review the results

When the import finishes, you see the total rows processed, how many succeeded, how many failed and the exact error for each failed row — so you know what to fix.

Step 6: Track every job

The Jobs page keeps a record of every import and export, so you can look back at what ran, when, and how it went.

Common issue

Most failed rows come from duplicate handles

When a metaobject requires unique handles, two rows with the same handle will fail. Check your handle column for repeats before you import — sorting it makes duplicates easy to spot.

Example: rows 3 and 41 share the handle denim-jacket
Rowhandletitle
3denim-jacketDenim Jacket Guide
4linen-shirtLinen Shirt Guide
41denim-jacketDenim Jacket Guide v2
